Nature Conservation
Conservation Efforts at PMCC
At Pate Marine Community Conservancy (PMCC), our dedication to conservation forms the bedrock of our existence. We are committed to safeguarding the unparalleled marine ecosystem that envelops our coastal haven in Faza, Lamu County, Kenya. Our work extends to protecting the vital habitats and charismatic wildlife that call this region home.
Marine Life Conservation
Sea Turtles: We take pride in our efforts to protect the various species of sea turtles that nest and forage along our shores. These ancient mariners are not only a symbol of resilience but also an essential part of our coastal ecosystem.
Dugongs: The elusive dugong, often referred to as the “sea cow,” is an endangered marine mammal. PMCC is at the forefront of conservation measures to secure their future in our waters.
Local Marine Managed Areas (LMMAs): PMCC has established temporary octopus closures in Saggaf, Chipopo, and Ijamba Idoda/Popo, safeguarding key marine areas to allow marine life to thrive and populations to recover.
Restoration
Mangrove Restoration: Our conservancy is a driving force behind the restoration of over 80,000 mangroves. These mangrove forests not only provide habitat and sustenance for countless species but also act as a natural buffer, shielding our coastline from the forces of the ocean.
Coral Reef Restoration: We have undertaken extensive coral reef restoration efforts at Chipopo, ensuring that these delicate underwater ecosystems continue to thrive. Healthy coral reefs are essential for the wellbeing of marine life and the resilience of our shoreline.
Monitoring and Research
Fisheries and Habitat Surveys: PMCC conducts regular surveys to assess the health of our fisheries and habitats. These data-driven insights guide our conservation strategies and promote sustainable management practices.
Strategic Partnerships: We work closely with esteemed partners, including The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Fauna & Flora International (FFI), and the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), to develop a comprehensive marine strategy for the Lamu Seascape.
The Marine Conservancy Management Monitoring System (Marine-CoMMs)
PMCC employs advanced technology to monitor and manage our marine resources. Through Marine-CoMMs, we ensure that our conservancy is run efficiently and in harmony with our conservation goals.
Learning from the World
To enhance our conservation practices, PMCC has organized fisheries learning visits to Madagascar, Zanzibar, and the South Coast. These visits facilitate knowledge exchange and help us adopt best practices in fisheries co-management.
