Community Development Initiatives

At Pate Marine Community Conservancy (PMCC), our commitment goes beyond conservation; it extends to the people who call this beautiful coastal region home. We believe that by empowering communities, we can create a sustainable future where both nature and the residents thrive.

Economic Empowerment Programs

Microfinance for Women: PMCC believes in the strength and potential of our women. Through our microfinance programs, we have empowered women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. From Phase 1 to Phase 3, we have invested in the success of women-led businesses, providing not just financial support but also training in entrepreneurship skills and financial literacy.

Outboard Engine Revolving Fund Project: Supporting local fishermen with 14 boats has not only enhanced their livelihoods but also ensured sustainable and responsible fishing practices.

Access to Clean Water

Water for Community: We’ve made clean and safe water accessible to the community through the construction of Djabias in Shanga Ishakani, Shanga Rubu, and Siyu. This ensures that residents have a reliable source of clean drinking water, which is a fundamental human right.

Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods

Fish to Market Pilot Project: Through our partnership with KUMBATIA Seafoods, we’ve opened doors for local fishermen to sell their catches in markets like Mombasa and Nyali. This initiative not only increases income but also connects the community to broader markets.

Women’s Microfinance Programs: By investing in women-led enterprises, we have stimulated economic growth and stability in the region. This multi-phase program has not only provided financial support but has also equipped women with the knowledge and skills to manage and grow their businesses.

Ensuring Community Well-being

Year 2023 Achievements: In 2023, PMCC secured significant funding for vital projects, including the installation of a solar-powered water desalination unit in Mtangawanda, the construction of VIP toilets, improved management of ocean plastics litter in Shanga Ishakani, and the construction of underground water tanks in Ndau village. These projects enhance the quality of life for the local community.

Addressing Marine Litter and Plastic Waste: We are dedicated to addressing the issue of marine litter and community plastic waste. Our proposed project in Faza village aims to mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste on Pate Island.
