Our Story

Pate Marine Community Conservancy (PMCC) is a community-based organization established in 2012 and fall within the administrative entities of Faza ward in Lamu County at the northernmost part of the Kenyan coast, bordering Somalia.

PMCC is a marine-based conservancy covering adjacent inshore ocean areas around Pate Island operating in a total area of 9,290 hectares.

The region has a wealth of natural resources that if sustainably managed and carefully conserved could continue to support the livelihoods of local people in the long term. This includes unique habitats, extensive mangroves, endangered marine wildlife (sea turtles, Dugongs), rich fisheries and resident and migratory species making it an important global biodiversity site that also provides a very important source of livelihood and food security to the local communities.

The coastline also includes beaches and dunes, coral reefs, and deep waters of the offshore North Kenya Bank, which is probably the most valuable offshore fishery in Kenya
